Common Entrance Test is conducted every year for admission to postgraduate management courses such as MBA in IIMs, FMS and other Bussiness schools in India.
It is conducted every year in the month of October-November.
Usually students start preparing for the exam from 8 months or 1 year before the exam.
However the preparation should be started as soon as possible.
If you have more than one year, you can start with improving your English language skills. Read books, magazines, novels for it. "Word Power" is a recommended book.
Also start working on your mathematics. Do mental calculations whenever you are free.
By January of the year you want to appear in CAT, start syllabus specific preparation. Joining coaching at this point would help you with the preparation.

I'll recommend you to start your preparation atleast 6 months before CAT exam dates so that even if you start from scratch you have enough time to give sufficient mocks and cover all topics.. I'll recommend you to read as much as possible as it'll really be helpful in your preparation. Also Coaching is not that important but test series are.. If you do not have any idea about cat syllabus then better join coaching atleast 6-7 months before exam otherwise you can take test series 4 months before exam. Also note CAT preparation might differ from student to student, so first identify your strength and abilities and plan your studies accordingly.
