I hope you are doing well. Firstly, give both JEE Mains JAN and APRIL. JEE MAINS JAN is better because people will get to know where they stands and can decide how much to prepare for boards/JEE Mains April/JEE ADVANCED. A person who gets 99+ percentile can give less time to boards as his basics are solid as ROCK so he can also give some time to JEE ADVANCED preparation. But someone who get 50 percentile in JEE MAINS JAN then he/she can see how weak their concepts are, so this person will put more efforts in boards and after that prepare for some other state level entrance exams also with JEE Mains April.

if you are  talking about 12th board purpose then April will be good time to attempt JEE mains but I would suggest you to appear for both of the exam which will increase your chances of getting good college because with single attempting you may have chances of getting less marks so if you are attempting both then you will know your mistakes that you did in first attempt that you can improve and do better in the second one.

For a student appearing in 12th, the January attempt is best as at that time the student have more preparation time for JEE like more than 5 months and also have time for boards preparation. After giving the January attempt well, the student has more time to prepare for JEE Advanced also.

If you want a 90%+ score in boards that April attempt is better for you as you will have no distraction in boards and will be able to prepare for JEE without any tension or stress.
