You asked for IITs, anyhow IISc offers direct admission to some programs and interview for some others

IIT Bombay: Excluding Energy Science & Engg, all the specializations were given direct admission based on GATE scores

IIT Madras: For M.S. they will call ranks upto 2500 and will select through written followed by interview. This is too good for people whose rank fall in between 10002000. For M.Tech they will keep on sending admission letter (56 rounds) based on gate scores

IIT Kanpur: Interview

IIT Delhi: Interview

IIT Kgp: Direct admission

IIT Roorkee: Online Web Counselling followed by Document verification. They will prepare their own merit list(different GATE formula for shortlisting).

IIT BHU: Shortlists 500 students for document verification and selects 80(Incl Waiting List). Direct admission

IIT Hyd: Direct Admission for all programs

IIT Guwahati: Direct admission for M.Tech. Written+Interview for M.S or M.S+Ph.D

IIT Bhubaneswar: Written+Interview

IIT Gandhinagar: Written+Interview

IIT Mandi: Written+Interview

*The selection criteria changes from year to year

Dont get scared of Interview, they will concentrate on your basics andproject.First they will make you comfortable with easy questions followed by tricky ones. Dont try to bluff the professors regarding your project or educational gap. Written exam will be on the similar lines of GATE.

Keep a track of Coaching Institutes( 23 sites) as they will publish the closing dates, guidance, selection criteria and cut-offs.

PS: Electrical Engg implies (Electrical Engg(EE/EEE) and ECE) in most of the IITs

It depends on the IIT and the course you’re applying for. 

IITD like IITK conducts interviews for all fields.

IITM- Direct Entry if are having very high rank

IITKgp : For ECE and EEE(maybe) its all direct entry no written test or interview.

IITK: : If you apply for M.Tech in EE they will call you for an interview whether you’re AIR 1 or 1000.
