Hello,

For admission to National Institutes of Technology (NITs) in India , the rank used is the JEE Main rank .

This rank is determined based on the marks obtained in the JEE Main examination. The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) uses this rank to allocate seats during the counselling process.

Hope it helps !

NIT admission is based on JEE Main All India Rank (AIR).

Top NITs (CSE): Rank under 5,000

Mid NITs (CSE): Rank under 15,000

Other branches: Up to 30,000

Newer NITs: Up to 50,000–70,000

National Institutes of Technology (NITs) in India use All India Rank (AIR) obtained in JEE Mains.

  1. JEE Main Exam: You need to appear for and qualify in the JEE Main exam, which consists of two papers: Paper 1 for B.E./B.Tech admissions and Paper 2 for B.Arch/B.Planning admissions.
  2. NTA Score and Rank: The National Testing Agency (NTA) calculates your NTA Score based on your performance in JEE Main. Following this, an All India Rank (AIR) is generated based on the NTA scores of all candidates.
  3. JoSAA Counselling: Admission to NITs is primarily done through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling process. During JoSAA counselling, you will be able to register, fill in your choices of NITs and branches based on your JEE Main AIR.
  4. Seat Allotment: JoSAA conducts several rounds of seat allotment based on your AIR, category, and the choices you have filled. The cutoffs for each NIT and branch are determined by the closing ranks in each round of counselling.

Key Points to Remember:

  • AIR is crucial: Your All India Rank in JEE Main is the primary factor determining your admission into an NIT.
  • Category-wise ranks: While the overall AIR is important, separate category-wise ranks (for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS, PwD) are also considered during the seat allocation process due to reservation policies.
  • Cutoff Ranks: Each NIT and each branch within an NIT has a specific cutoff rank for each category. These cutoff ranks vary from year to year depending on factors like the difficulty of the exam, the number of applicants, and the availability of seats.
  • JoSAA Website: You can find the previous years' cutoff ranks for different NITs and branches on the official JoSAA website. This can give you a general idea of the ranks required for admission.

Therefore, to get admission into an NIT, you need to secure a good All India Rank in the JEE Main examination, and the specific rank required will depend on the NIT, the branch you are seeking admission to, and your category.

Hope It Helps !
