You need the certificate only when you wish to avail reservation .

reservation are for following group:

1.GEN-EWS

2.OBC-NCL

3.SC

4.ST

5.PWD

These certificate needs to be prescribed format.You can check the official website for the format here: https://jeeadv.ac.in/downloads.html
