NIFT has been granted statutory status under the act of Parliament of India in 2006, empowering the Institute to award degrees and other academic distinctions, because it already has a statutory status, it doesn't require a UGC recognition.

On its part, the government has passed National Institute of Fashion Technology Bill, 2006, to nurture and promote excellence in fashion technology.
