There were many scientists who contributed in the discovery of cell theory but the discovery is largely attributed to Robert Hooke.

The cell theory proposed that the cell is the fundamental, structural and functional unit of all living organisms and that the new cells are formed from the existing cells. In 1665, Robert Hook first discovered "Cell". In later years, Theodor Schwann and Matthias Jakob Schleiden proposed the cell theory which describes the properties of cells.
