Sir William Jones (1746–1794) was a British jurist, linguist, and scholar of ancient India. He is most famous for being a pioneer in Indo-European linguistics and for founding the Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1784.  His Purpose and Contributions Jones’s primary purpose was to bridge the gap between Western and Eastern knowledge.
