Hello there!

Greetings!

Mitochondria is known as cell within a cell because of the anomalous behaviour it shows, unlike other cell organelles it has its own dna and it can replicate on its own and has ribosomes similar to prokaryotes , actually it can be understood well with the help of endosymbiotic theory according to which mitochondria is a prokaryotic cell which was capable of producing energy and was engulfed by some large cells which were not capable of producing energy and later on they established a symbiotic relationship to live together and gave rise to eukaryotic cell , mitochondria provided energy whereas in return it got a safe environment to stay , so yes mitochondria is a cell within a cell.

Thankyou

Hello Aspirant,

Hope you are doing well.

It is found in most of the eukaryotic organisms. It contains DNA. It produces energy to the cell ATP, through respiration and to regulate cellular metabolism.

Good luck
