They might be characterized in view of their actual properties,solid or liquid, separately fats and oils at room temperature , on extremity, or on their centrality for people, yet the ideal characterization depends on their structure.

In view of structure, they can be arranged in three significant groups.

• Simple lipids - Simple lipids have Esters of glycerol and fatty acids. Example : wax.
• Complex lipids - Complex lipids have esters of fatty acids and Phosphoric acid. Example : phospholipids and sphingolipids.
• Derived lipids - Derived lipids are the constituents of above two groups. Example : Cholesterol and bile acids.
