Hello,
There are iron and copper loss in transformer. If you divide the area of core into two rectangles by laminating the core, you can reduce losses.
Also, increasing the cross sectional area of the conductors forming the coils results in reduction in the copper losses, but the weight and cost of the transformer will increase. The core losses can be reduced only by elimination.
