Dear Aspirant,

Hope you are doing well!

Psychology is a multidisciplinary subject. There are so many branches. It can be widely used any field and that is why you have so many opportunities to choose from. The most common fields are clinical psychology, counselling psychology, developmental psychology, criminal psychology, sports psychology, Human Resource psychology, industrial psychology, school psychology, child psychology, family psychology and so on. Today, it is in demand because of the growing mental distress and the need for therapy, especially in India. A good career would also require you to complete your post-graduation and after that, at least M.Phil or PhD. It also depends on whether your degree is of M.A. or M.Sc. which would also determine your field. It is in demand and is a really good option.

Irrespective of what field you select, here are the top job opportunities in psychology today, though I would suggest you to choose the field first if you are specifically aiming for anyone of these.

1. Clinical psychologist: This is the most common career chosen by psychology majors and also the 'typical' psychologist that everyone talks about today. Your pay will depend upon where you work mostly. In India, average salary is around Rs. 25000 to Rs. 30000 but it can go up to Rs. 70000 to 1 lakh depending upon where you work. For instance, in NIMHANS, it is around Rs. 40,000 depending on your profile. (salary per month)

2. Counselling Psychology: This field has a lot of scope because of its requirement just like clinical psychology. Nowadays, schools, corporates, colleges hire counselling psychologists in different domains like teaching, supervising, research and individually also assess people in family matters or assessments. Salary can range from 25000 to 70000 depending on your experience, profile and company you are working for.

3. Other fields: If your are interested in social work or children, you should go for child psychology or if you are interested in sports, then sports psychology. All fields have government jobs, analytical jobs, research jobs, according to your personal area of interest and all of them have a heavy requirement. There are also fields which nobody knows about, for instance, aviation psychology that are being hired in air transport companies or ministries like DRDO.

If you want something similar to a corporate job, you can go for HR Psychology. Expressive Arts is a field which is again emerging and has a lot of facets again. You can become a therapist who can also use the conventional methods like psychoanalysis and gestalt or you can go for Dance movement therapy or psychodrama. The courses around India are scarce but there are distance learning programs for the latter.

Your salary will always matter on your job setting and experience. If you are working in a hospital, it would obviously be different from working in an NGO. So, I would suggest, you work on selecting your field and search for government organisations or the settings where they can be applied. You can also post another question requesting for the same if you want to gain more knowledge about any of the fields or highest paying organisations or how your approach should be. Hope this helps you!

Hello Aspirant,

A psychology degree develops knowledge of human behavior as well as research, statistics, and writing skills. It also provides training in a number of skills which can be applied to many occupations and disciplines. It is a good option but it depends on your interest.

After your masters you can work in the following mentioned areas. There can be more options too as per your interest.

Counselors are required in NGOs, Old age homes, Rehabilitation Centers, Career counseling centers etc.

Clinical psychologists are in great demand, though they are not paid for the efforts they put in during their educational years. It is also required to complete your M.Phil, before you start to practice independently.

Organizational psychologists are in great demand and they work in big MNCs and organizations. You can also work in the HR department.

Research : Both qualitative and quantitative research are promising areas and there is an increasing demand in the area. You get a good salary Package you may pursue PhD if the area interests you after this you can apply for the Professor in any Institute or College.

Good Luck!
