With a focus on Ayurveda, an ancient Indian medical system, a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) is a 5.5-year undergraduate degree that combines theoretical and clinical instruction, including a year-long internship.  A BAMS degree offers thorough understanding of "Ashtanga Ayurveda" in addition to scientific breakthroughs in contemporary medicine.  It also involves a lot of hands-on training.  BAMS courses are offered by around 273 educational institutions in India, 220 of which are private and the remaining 53 of which are government colleges.
