Dear Arvind,

JEE Mains and JEE Advanced are two entrance exams for Engineering coursesconducted by CBSE  for Admission into  top IITs , IIITs and NITs.

Now basic difference is that for IITs one has to appear for both Jee mains and Advanced. Candidate has to be amongst top 2.24 lakh students to appaear for Jee Advanced to secure Admission into IITs.

Whereas, for NITs and all IIITs  and all other government funded institutions one has to appear only for JEE Mains, over here JEE Advanced is not acceptable.


The ranks which students receive are called as AIR that is All India Rank.

AIR = All India rank
IIT JEE Mains = entrance exam for NITs/IIITs and other govt colleges
IIT Advance = entrance exam after you clear your jee mains and if you clear advance paper with good score you will get admission in IIT (Indian institute of technology).
