can carbon form four bonds with carbon

Hello,

No. When a single bond is formed between carbon atoms, energy is released. Changing the molecule's electron positioning to make a double bond releases more energy, but not as much as when the first bond was made. Making a triple bond again releases energy, but again to a lower degree. However, when a fourth bond is attempted, the overfilled electrons between the atoms withstand the change so strongly that it releases little, if any, energy.

Thank you.

Hello aspirant,

Hope you are doing great...!!

Atoms bond by sharing electrons. In a typical bond two electrons are shared, one from each of the atoms involved. Carbon has four sharable electrons of its own, so it tends to form four bonds to other atoms.

There is no 4 bond formed between carbon because of the carbon electron orbitals. Since it has 4 valence electrons, it needs 4 more electrons to fill its outer energy level.

It does so by forming covalent bonds with another element, to complete its Octet rule.

Hope this helps you!

All the best:)
