Hi,
Only a Sikh can join the Sikh Regiment and Sikh Light Infantry Regiment as a soldier . However any Indian citizen / Nepal citizen can join both the Sikh Regiments as a Commissioned Officer whatever be his Religion . For Officers in the Sikh Regiment wearing a Turban is not compulsory but most of the Non Sikh officers in Sikh Regiments wear a turban on Ceremonial parades voluntarily . Other wise they wear the head dress as authorised for Non Sikh Officers from other Regiments with badges of Sikh Regiment . Similarly a Sikh can not join other Regiments based on class system . They can not Join Gorkha or Assam Regiment as sepoys . But a Sikh can join these Regiments as an Officer . As an officer he will be allowed to wear Turban as a Sikh but with badges of the Regiment.. AS an officer , he may also wear if he wishes , head dress as authorised to other Non Sikh Officers .
A Sikh can join as a soldier any of the mixed caste Regiments like Mahar Regiment , Guards , Mechanised Infantry and all other Corps or services which are open to all Indian citizens as a Sepoy and wear a Turban . A Sikh can join as a commissioned officer , any Regiment , Corps , branch , unit of the Indian Army, Navy and Airforce and wear a Turban .
Hope this helps.
Good luck.
