Hello,

One can definitely self study for mechanical engineering. It's not that tough if your basic idea and knowledge is clear.
In college one has to study by themselves, no one takes tuitions or anything to study. There are plenty of resources available online to help you clear your concepts. You can refer to books and watch online lectures and if you pay full attention your concepts would be clear really easily. Well you'll definitely need some help with clearing concepts about theorems, laws and everything but you'll easily get the help online, from your books and your professors as well.
You'll just be required to devote complete attention to your study hours and if you do then you don't have much to worry about. When you have doubts just look it up online and you'll find the help you need.

Hope this helps.
