JEE is just one of the exams to get admission into B.tech. It is so popular because it gets you admission into the NITs (through JEE Mains) and IITs (JEE advanced)

there are plenty of other national level exams which offer good colleges for admission, like:

BITSAT - for BITS Pilani and other campuses (pilani campus is as great as one of the good IITs)

VITEEE - for Vellore Institute of Tech

SRMJEE - SRM

COMEDK - for colleges in Karnataka (like Christ college, RV college, MS ramaiah, etc)

MHT CET - for admission into Maharashtra based colleges

YES you can get admission into private colleges without considering JEE. JEE Mains is an entrance exam required to take admission into government colleges like IITs,NITs and GFTIs.
