Hello Rachana,

Carboxylic acids do not give characteristic reaction of carbonyl group. This is because the lone pairs on oxygen atom attached to hydrogen atom in the -COOH group are involved in resonance thereby making the carbon atom less electrophilic. Hence, carboxylic acids do not give characteristic reaction of carbonyl group.

Hope it helped. Thank you.

All the best.

Hi Aspirant.

The reason for the above is :

The carbonyl group in carboxylic acid is not true because it consists aldehydes and ketones. Hence, carboxylic acid does not give right characteristic reactions of carbonyl group

It also do not form oximes, hydra zones. This is because the lone pairs on oxygen atom could be attached to hydrogen atom in the COOH group and involved in making carbon atom less electrophilic.

Hope this helps !
