Dear student,

Brittle materialsdo not undergo deformation. Instead of going in deformation, they break because they can't withstand load. And therefore the brittle materials fail by breaking of the bonds between atoms. And this breaking of bonds generally requires a tensile stress along the bond.

So, components made of a brittle materials fails, because the bonds betweens atoms breaks due to a tensile stress along the bond.
