Dear Student,

The Private sphere is a certain sector of societal life in which an individual enjoys a degree of authority, unhampered by interventions from government or other institutes. Example of the private sphere is: Home and family.

The Public Sphere is the arena where citizens come together, exchange opinions regarding public affairs, discuss, deliberate and eventually from public opinion.

This is an ideological dichotomy between domains gendered respectively as male and female, as in 'a women's place is in the home'. The Public sphere is that of adult males; the private sphere is that of women and children. The basic distinction between them is that the public sphere is the realm of politics where strangers come together to engage in the free exchange of ideas, and is open to everyone, whereas the private sphere is a smaller, typically enclosed realm (like home) that is only open to those who have permission to enter it.

Thank You.
