Cell division can take place in two ways: mitosis and meiosis.

In the case of Mitosis the cell divides to two daughter cells each with the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent cell. The primary function of mitosis is general growth and repair. It is also used for cell reproduction. Mitosis was discovered by Walther Flamming

Whereas in Meiosis the cell division results in the formation of four daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell. The aims is to provide genetic diversity through sexual reproduction. Meiosis was discovered by Oscar Hertwig.
