Correct Answer: 6 and 12

Solution : Given:
96 ÷ 6 – 16 + 12 × 8 = 40

Replace the given numbers in the options one by one with the original numbers in the given equation.
First option: 6 and 16
96 ÷ 6 – 16 + 12 × 8 = 40
⇒ 96 ÷ 16 – 6 + 12 × 8 = 40
⇒ 6 – 6 + 12 × 8
⇒ 96
⇒ 96 ≠ 40
Second option: 96 and 16

96 ÷ 6 – 16 + 12 × 8 = 40
⇒ 16 ÷ 6 – 96 + 12 × 8 = 40
⇒ 2.66 – 96 + 12 × 8
⇒ 2.66 – 96 + 96
⇒ 2.66 ≠ 40
Third option: 6 and 8

96 ÷ 6 – 16 + 12 × 8 = 40
⇒ 96 ÷ 8 – 16 + 12 × 6 = 40
⇒ 12 – 16 + 12 × 6
⇒ 12 – 16 + 72 = 68
⇒ 68 ≠ 40
Fourth option: 6 and 12
96 ÷ 6 – 16 + 12 × 8 = 40
⇒ 96 ÷ 12 – 16 + 6 × 8 = 40
⇒ 8 – 16 + 6 × 8
⇒ 8 – 16 + 48 = 40
⇒ 40 = 40

So, the fourth option satisfies the equation. Hence, the fourth option is correct.
