When light passes through a narrow slit, it bends and spreads out in a pattern of bright and dark bands called diffraction fringes. This phenomenon is called single-slit diffraction.
You can see a diffraction pattern by placing your index and middle fingers close together and looking through the opening at a light bulb.
Also you can have a look on PHYSICS NOTES to understand diffraction of light better.
