YES ,IT IS MANDATORY TO APPEAR IN BOTH THE PAPER OF JEE ADVANCE, OTHERWISE YOUR RESULT COULD NOT BE DECLARED. FURTHER IN BOTH THE PAPER YOU SHOULD ACQUIRE MINIMUM QUALIFYING MARKS AS WELL.
The way your head & legs are parts of your body so also both papers 1 & 2 are parts of JEE adv without one the other one has no value.Yo must have to take both the papers, failure to take one will make you disqualified


JEE believes that

A student who has not done well in the first paper (due to some exam-fever, anxiety and whatnot) deserves another chance.

A student who has done well in the first paper should not get overconfident, lazy and should be able to focus on the exam, so that the best out of the best gets filtered out.

Hey, 

Paper-1 offers admission in B.Tech in NIT , IIIT, CFTIs and SFIs whereas Paper-2 offers admission B.Arch and B.Planning course in different colleges of the country. In simple language Paper 1 is for engineering aspirants whereas Paper 2 is for architecture students. 

If you're preparing for engineering, Paper 1 is the exam you should attempt. 

If you're preparing for architecture, you ahoukd write paper 2.
