Yes…cateogary certificate is compulsory for the students to avail the benefits of reservation provided in the IIT/NIT according to govt. Rules..if u belong to obc/sc/St but don't have any valid certificate for that then u will be treated as a general cateogary candidate.. category of student is being asked during form filling of jee
