Akul there is as such no disadvantage for taking a year drop for CAT preparation. Only thing is that you might be questioned what you actually did in this one year during the interview and if you say only CAT preparation then it might create a very wrong impression right from the starting of the interview because 99% of the students coming into any IIM have done the preparation either in the final year of their graduation or while working in any company.

But as you have mentioned in the below comment that doing another course can affect your performance on CAT exam so no way I am going to recommend you to do any other course because to get a call from top 3 IIMs like IIM A, B and C you need to score atleast above 99.7 percentile, to get a call from other old IIMs like IIM L, K, I and S you need to get atleast above 98.5 percentile and atleast above 95 percentile to get calls from new and ultra new IIMs.

And what I am talking about is getting a call for the second round of WAT and interview. Without performing in the second round you can never expect an admission in any of the IIMs. Plus even in the aggregate score of the final merit list along with the interview marks the CAT marks have the highest weightage. So, spoiling your CAT performance is not at all recommended option.

You can do one thing if possible you can work for minimal time in any NGO or social service and get a certificate for a year work then you can justify your answer that with CAT preparation you were doing social service or if you can come up with some entrepreneurial idea so you can say you were working on it but you were not successful. These both the things will not even save you in that question but will get you extra brownie points an can create a very good impression in interview right from starting. Rest of the interview will depend on your answers to other questions. Although if you say any of the two things mentioned above you will need to prepare thoroughly very deep about both the things because 99% interviewee is going on those two topics.

Feel free to ask if you have any more queries. All the best!!

So if I just prepare for CAT in this one year by taking will cost me a seat in the IIMs? Because as u said if I join any NGO I have to work obviously and for that also I have to  travel other areas and work right??And the gap is not a total one year gap I completed my Graduation in May 2018 and I will appear for CAT in November 2018 So I need this much time for preparing for CAT right??If I want to get into IIMs??

Actually I was searching for NGOs to work in Mumbai But most of them require interns for full-time office work or they want them to travel to cities like Bangalore So as u can understand I can't afford this right ??That is y I m feeling depressed because I can't let this chance of CAT go waste by not giving my 100% to it and I m also worried that this gap should not cost me the IIM A,B or C seat.

Ok, cool don't get depressed you concentrate on preparing for CAT exam until October or November whenever the exam is conducted without any interference. After the CAT exam, you can join an NGO and start working for it. There will be no problem because the interviews for IIMs will be starting at the end of February month. So, you will get enough time to work and get a certificate also. This will neither cause any hindrance in your CAT preparation nor keep you empty in this year. So, your year gap problem will also be solved. And don't worry about interview preparation because interviews are totally random. I can give you tips on how to drive the interview in your favour later. First, clear the CAT exam with a very good percentile. PS: In 2016 my first interview was in IIM Kozhikode. At that time I was working in Gurgaon and until interview morning I was half prepared, I was revising my HR questions and preparing answers while travelling in metro from Gurgaon to Delhi. And I got selected in the first round of IIM Kozhikode. Completed my MBA in March 2018.

Hi Dear,

according to me , the one year gap will not give you any kind of disadvantage for admission in IIMs but i will suggest you that you should go for another course as well with your cat preparation because it will help you alot and also create a good image of your resume. utilise your one year efficiently.

i hope the information is helpful for you

But I doubt if I take a course I won't be able to give my best shot to the CAT .Nowadays, I m studying almost the whole day to get into IIM anyhow.Because if I start doing some kind of course then Travel plus class time and other things will distribute my time and in turn I may not be able to give that much time in preparation of CAT as much i m going today .So I m thinking about just studying for CAT.What do u think about this?
