Below is the chronology for the British establishment over India:

  • 1600: East India Company got royal charter for trade
  • 1612: First factory established in Surat
  • 1639: Madras (Chennai) founded as trading post
  • 1757: Battle of Plassey - Robert Clive defeated Nawab, gained Bengal
  • 1764: Battle of Buxar - control over Bihar, Bengal, Odisha
  • 1765: Got Diwani rights (revenue collection) from Mughal Emperor
  • 1798: Wellesley's Subsidiary Alliance policy began
  • 1848-56: Dalhousie's Doctrine of Lapse annexed many princely states
  • 1857: First War of Independence/Revolt ended Company rule
  • 1858: Government of India Act - Crown took direct control via Viceroy
