Bharath University was founded in 1984 as Bharath Institute of Science and Technology by Dr. S. Jagathrakshakan. It is among the first autonomous engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu. It is a deemed university ranked by national Institutional Ranking Framework- Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India- as no. 1 -2017 amonst all institutions in India for Outreach and Inclusivity, Ranked as no. 2 -2018 amongst all institutions in India for Outreach and Inclusivity, ranked as no.35, amongst all institutions in India in the Overall ranking category.

According to the students currently enrolled in bharath university the gender ratio is somewhat 60:40 boys:girls in some courses while in some it is 70:30.
