IIT JAM is a national level examination organized to offer admission into M.Sc. (four semesters), M.Sc. Ph.D., and M.Sc. Ph.D. dual degree etc. programmes at IITs.

Besides having a minimum bachelor's degree, for specific branches, specific subjects are required.

Some of the branches like M.Sc. Biotechnology are open for any branch that the candidate has pursued before while other branches require pre-requisite knowledge of subjects.

M.Sc. Astronomy also takes up candidates that have mechanical degree.
