To join IIT, you need to have a good rank in JEE Advanced.  A person would be eligible for JEE Advanced only after clearing the cutoffs of JEE Mains. Different IITs offer different rank cutoffs fir different branches to be eligible to join them. It varies from branch to branch and college to college. For example, the JEE Advanced closing rank for Biotechnology and biochemical engineering at IIT Delhi was 3650 in year 2018, whereas the closing rank for Computer science and engineering was 100 at IIT Delhi.

In order to get admission in IIT , you must pass the JEE Mains exam with minimum passing cut off. once you clear the JEE Mains, you can appear for the JEE Advance exam. Based in the rank scored in the advance exam, the admission are done in different IIT colleges.
