Depends on how low marks you are talking about here.
NIT i.e National Institute of Technology if one of the prestigious engineering college in India. If you want to go for NITs situated in the northeast of India then a score of about 140-150 will be enough but if you want top NITs like NIT Trichy or Warangal then you will need a solid score of 250+.
It also depends on your branch what is your choice in that regard if you a low score in Jee Mains then might also get a new NIT and a bad branch which might not be of your interest. For CSE, ECE, ME, EEE, IT in NITs you do need a good score. Although you might get Production engineering or civil in one of the NITs with a low score.

Hi Varsha,
In order to take admission in the Bachelor's courses offered by government aided institutions like NIT, IIIT, GFIT, etc., the candidate needs to give the JEE main exam. You can only get admission in NIT on the basis of your JEE Main rank, and qualifying their eligibility criteria of minimum percentage required in 12th board or equivalent examination. I am sorry to inform you that there is no other way. Do go for the other options.
