Hi Utsav,
For a candidate of general category, If you want branches like CSE, IT, Electrical, Electronics then your rank should be around 25k.
For branches like Civil, Chemical, and Mechanical a rank of 30k would suffice.
For other no-core branches closing rank is usually around 40k.
If you study decently then you will get CS in HBTU Kanpur easily.
All the best

While talking about only getting into NIT , I'm not considering any specific branch or any specific NIT.
Cutoff’s of different NIT's are different according to their respective ranks.
So if your rank is approx 35k in general category you may get average branch in lowlevel of NIT.
Here's a list below that's showing upto which rank (in their respective category) can someone get a seat in NIT.
GENRAL : Upto 35k (easily) [ 41k (last round)]
OBC Category : Upto 12k ( OBC rank)
SC : 7k ( SC rank)
ST : 3.5k ( ST rank)
Above info. is for other state category.
But if you are from a state whose NIT is not a top or middle level NIT, you can get into NIT even if your rank is above 35k.
e.g. J&k, on applying HS (Home state) quota you can get a average branch in NIT Srinagar even if you rank is 41k (general).
I hope it helps!
