Hello,

There are five bone types:

flat, long, small, irregular, and sesamoid.

The long bones include the thigh, knee, arm, and forearm bones. The short bones are essentially cube shaped with approximately equal vertical and horizontal dimensions. They are mostly made of spongy bone, surrounded by a thin layer of compact bone. The bones of the wrist and ankle have small bones. Flat bones are small, flattened, and typically curved flat bones. The bulk of the cranium's bones are flat bones. Irregular bones are classified as bones that are not in any of the three groups above. They are predominantly spongy tissue, which is covered by a thin compact bone layer. Irregular bones include the vertebrae and some of the bones in the skull. Finally, Sesamoid bones are tendon-embedded bones. In the tendons of the hands, knees and feet, these thin, round bones are commonly found. In order to protect tendons from stress and wear, sesamoid bones function. An example of a sesamoid bone is the patella, generally referred to as the kneecap.

Bones can be categorised to 4 types in general. They are the

Long Bones

Short Bones

Flat Bones

Irregular Bones

Long bones as the name suggests are longer than wider and have a long shaft with bulky extremities called the proximal and digital extremity. These bones are usually compact but at the either end of the extremities, they might be bulky. The bones of arm, forearm, leg and thigh are long bones.

Short bones are the bones of your wrist and ankles. They are roughly cubic in shape with equal vertical and horizontal dimensions. They are primarily sponge bones but are also covered by a thin layer of compact bones.

Bones of the brain or the cranium are called the flat bones. These are thin, flattened and usually curved. If you look at the human skull, you will have an idea why the bones are flat in nature.

The bones that do not fall in any of the above Categories fall under Irregular bones. These are spongy bones with a thin layer of compact bones. The vertebrae and few bones of the skull fall under this Category.
