When the resistors are connected in series connection, all the resistors are connected in one single chain with no branching in any of the connections.

The equivalent resistance of the circuit is given by the arithmetic sum of individual resistances and the total current of the circuit is given by a voltage source divided by the total resistance. Hence, equal current is distributed among all resistors.
