Hypogynous flowers are those in which the ovary is superior. This means the sepals, petals and stamens arise from below the ovary, so the ovary stays at the highest position on the floral axis. Because of this arrangement, the ovary is completely free and exposed.

A common example is the flower of mustard. In mustard, the ovary sits above all other floral parts, and the petals and stamens are attached below it, which clearly shows the hypogynous condition. Other examples include brinjal, china rose and sunflower.

This type of arrangement helps in better exposure of reproductive parts and efficient pollination. All the best.
