UPSC IAS examination is conducted in 3 stages which are listed below :-

*The first stage of the exam is Preliminary examination  :- it is  objective and there are two papers GS 1 and GS 2

*The second stage, Mains :- it iis written exam it has gs1, gs2 ,gs3, gs4 and two optional paper and essay writing

*If you manage to clear both prelims and mains then you are to go through third stage i.e interview/personality test .

It has two papers - General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper-II.

IAS Exam (Indian Administrative Services)is conducted to invite candidates who wish to seek employment at All India Services such asI.A.S, I.P.S, I.F.S, I.R.Sand various other Group A and Group B services.IAS EXAM.is held in threedifferent stages- Preliminary Examination, Mains examination and Interview.On the basis of the marks obtained in Mains examination and Interview, a final merit list prepared with the name of the candidates who are eligible for recruitment provided their documents are also according to the requirement.

Selection of candidates is based on the cut offs released by the commission after preliminary examination and mains examination. Candidate who qualifies in the preliminary examination can sit for UPSC mains examination. Similarly, a cut off is released according to which qualified candidates are called for the interview session hence, preparation of merit list takes place while excluding marks scored in preliminary examination.


UPSC Exam Eligibility

The UPSC prescribes certain eligibility conditions for a candidate to be able to appear for the IAS prelims exam. These conditions are given below:

NATIONALITY

For IAS and IPS:

Candidate should be a citizen of India.

For all other services:

Candidate should be either:

A citizen of India, or

A subject of Bhutan or Nepal, or

A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or

a person of Indian origin (PIO) who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zaire and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Note: Candidates belonging to b, c and d are not eligible for the Indian Foreign Service. And for all other services, they should produce a Certificate of Eligibility from the Indian Government.

AGE LIMIT

Candidates should have attained 21 years of age to appear for the UPSC CSE. The following table gives the upper age limit criterion for the UPSC exam:

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION

The candidate must have at least abachelors degreefrom a recognised university. Engineers, medical doctors and even candidates with professional/technical qualifications which are recognized by the Government as equivalent to professional/technical degrees are eligible to apply. Candidates who are awaiting their final year results or are yet to take such final exam can also apply and take the prelims, but they should produce proof of passing while applying for the UPSC mains exam.

IAS Exam Preliminary Examinations
Here is the exam pattern followed by UPSC for Preliminary examination:

Candidates will proceed to the Mains examination after the commission releases cut off to qualify Preliminary Examination. The criterion of evaluation in preliminary examination to determine cut off will be on the basis of minimum qualifying marks of 33 % in General Studies Paper-II of Preliminary Examination and total qualifying marks of General Studies Paper-I of Preliminary Examination.



IAS Exam Mains examination

To sit for IAS mains examination, candidate is required to qualify the Preliminary examination. Those who successfully clear the preliminary examination by qualifying the cut off set by UPSC shall compete with candidate ten to twelve times to the number of vacancies available.

Mains examination shall consist of 7 papers and an interview session which will be counted for merit calculation. Each paper will be of 3 hours duration. Total marks for each paper will be 250 marks. Following table elaborates the details regarding UPSC mains examination pattern:

Those who qualify the mains examination as per the cut off set by the commission shall be called for the interview session or personality test which will also be considered for merit calculation. Candidate will be selected on the basis of the career records and some general questions pertaining to the job profile will be asked to test candidates knowledge and personality traits. Marks scored in the mains examination and interview session will be determining factors of selection of the candidate, no qualifying list or cut off will be released after this.

IAS Exam Interview

The most important stage that must be cleared in order to get recruited inAll India Servicesis that of the Personality Test. Once you clear the stage you are eligible for training.

Prelims Exam pattern:-

• The Prelims stage of IAS consists of 2 compulsory papers- General Ability Test and the Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT). This will test the analytical skills of the candidates.
• All questions are objective in nature.
• Questions are set in both English and Hindi Language. However, questions relating to the English Language Comprehension skills of the class 10th level is tested through a passage from English language only without providing Hindi translation thereof in the question paper.
• IAS Prelims is a qualifying exam. Candidates have to get a minimum of 33 % to be qualified for the Mains.
• Both papers are qualifying their marks are not included in final result.
• The number of candidates to be admitted to Mains is about twelve to thirteen times the total an approximate number of vacancies to be filled in the year through examination.
