Atkeast 1 year of preparation time is mandatory to score well.
Studnets with 99 percentile and above scores in CAT are called at top IIMs for Group discussion and personal interview rounds.
Post that all your paramters are considered for bringing up cumulative score like Gender, Graduation scores, 10th and 12th scores, CAT scorrs, GD PI scores.
