Dear Mahesh

It is not at all true that you cannot get a seat in IIMs becuase you are a fresher. Almost 50 percent seats in all IIMs are filled by freshers (just a rough projection of figures).

So remove it from your mind that you wont get in because you are a fresher. But there are always points for work-experience. This can be easily managed by getting a high percentile in CAT.

Also work ex gives some good points to talk in interviews so please make sure that you prepare your story well and highlight how you worked in teams clubs or if you have any other organizing experience in college.

All the best

Yes, you can definitely get seats in IIMs. Work Experience is only one of the factor in the selection procedure. After you giver CAT exam then all the colleges in which you apply including IIMs makes a merit list to call students for second round of interview and WSAT which is made in the basis of your aggregate score and which is based on different parameters such as CAT marks, 10th, 12th and graduation percentage, work experience, engineer or non-engineer, gender etc. whose weightage vary according to different colleges.

In this weightage of work experience is generally approx 5-10%. So this is not at all mandatory for you to go into the IIMs. You can score very well in CAT exam and with good score in other parameters, you can definitely get a call for the second round from IIMs.

For your information in each and every IIMs, there are 20-30% students who are freshers i.e. just joined after graduating. Only IIM Bangalore and IIM Kozhikode are the few IIMs which gives a little high weightage to work experience but still even in these IIMs you will find 1/4th freshers as students in each batch.

Prepare well and all the best!!

Yes ofcourse you can go for a MBA after your Btech. It actually depends on what you want to do. There are various domains in MBA like consulting, finance, sales and marketing, operations, IT and HR. Consuting and IT usually requires experience and therefore if you want to pursue a career in them you should get workex before you go for MBA.

On the other hand if you plan to pursue sales and marketing or finance or HR you can go for MBA right after your BTech as these domains generally prefer freshers to workex people. So, I would suggest you decide which domain suits you and then make the decision of whether to go for MBA or not.

There are two options, either you join an MBA course just after your graduation or you gain some industry experience or work experience before joining the course. All the top Business schools have seats for both freshers and expirienced candidates.

Though there is no disadvantage in terms of opportunities and understanding of the course in either of the two options but if you have an prior work expirience you may understand the course in a better way and some companies give priority to expirienced candidates.

If you are planning to do it just after your graduation that is also fine. You should select an MBA specialization as per your interest in marketing, finance, HR, Operations, Strategy, IT Analytics etc. You can also join an general management program and Study all of these in your first year and then choose your specialisation in the second year.

You should prepare to the best of your abilities and score a good percentile to join a good B School for better exposure, learning opportunities and placements

All the best!
