JEE Mains is an annual exam that is conducted by the National Testing Agency and the CBSE for admissions to undergraduate engineering courses in NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and other institutes. It also serves as the first stage for admission to IITs through JEE Advanced.

EWS is a new category that has been created by the MHRD for economically weaker sections. 10% seats will be reserved for those candidates whose annual family income is less than INR 8 lakh per annum.

As for your question, it isn't about the rank being less than open category, you will get a category rank of EWS and hence will be eligible for admission under it in the 10% reserved seats. If you mean whether EWS category rank will be lower than open category rank, then yes it will be lower as the number of canidates in EWS category is lesser as compared to open category.
