With 55 percentile in JEE Mains 2025, your estimated CRL rank falls around 5.5 to 6 lakh. At this level, getting a seat in a government engineering college through JoSAA counselling is highly unlikely, especially under the General or OBC categories.

Most NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs have closing ranks well below this range. For General category candidates, cutoffs typically close before 1.2 lakh rank. Even for OBC-NCL, the limit is generally around 2.5 lakh. However, if you belong to the SC or ST category, you may have a slim chance in less competitive branches at newer NITs or GFTIs, particularly in the later rounds of counselling.

If you still want to fill the JoSAA form, you can do so—there is no harm—but keep expectations realistic. You are unlikely to get a seat unless you're in a reserved category with home state advantage.

Instead, consider applying through state-level counselling processes (such as in Bihar, MP, UP, Rajasthan, etc.), where some government or semi-government colleges may accept lower percentiles. You can also explore private engineering colleges that accept JEE scores regardless of rank.
