If you are giving either any national or state level examination or you are taking admission in any university under caste quota, you need to provide valid details of your caste to the administrative staff. Only then, your form is selected under reserved caste quota otherwise you will be allotted a seat under general category only.

So yes, you need to provide a certificate. Your form will not be discarded but will be taken under general Category.
