Yes, you can write the JEE exam even after enrolling in a college , but there are a few important conditions and points to keep in mind:
You can appear for JEE Main up to 3 consecutive years starting from your 12th board passing year.
For example, if you passed 12th in 2023, you can appear in 2023, 2024, and 2025 .
To be eligible for JEE Advanced (for IITs), you must:
Be in the top 2.5 lakh JEE Main scorers.
Have appeared in JEE Advanced only twice in two consecutive years .
Not have taken admission in an IIT previously (even if you left later).
If you get a good percentile in JEE Main and secure a rank good enough for NITs, IIITs, or GFTIs, you can take admission through JoSAA counseling , even if you’re studying in another college.
Many students do this: they prepare for JEE again while studying in a local college, and if they improve their score, they drop their current college and join the better one .
You’ll have to withdraw from your current college before joining the new one.
Some colleges may retain original documents or have fee refund policies to consider.
It’s a valid and fairly common route, especially among students aiming for IITs or NITs after not performing well initially.
It is possible to appear for and clear JEE after joining an engineering college (except any IIT or ISM, that would make you ineligible). However, it will certainly be more difficult than studying at home or joining a coaching institute for one year and then appearing for JEE.
