Annamalai University has been approved by University grants council. Besides this the University has also been approved by various other organisations. These organisations are national assessment and accreditation council, National institute of ranking framework. National council of teaching education, all India council of technical education, medical council of India, dental council of India etc.

Annamalai University offers both regular and distance education courses to the students at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate levels.

The University Grants Commission has not authorised the open and distance learning (ODL) programmes at Annamalai University (UGC).

The UGC stated in a formal notification dated March 25 that "ODL programmes offered by the Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu are invalid and the University is completely accountable for the career repercussions of the students, if any, arising out of the same."
