for WBCS, if you qualify prelims then you need to write mains.

mains has 8 papers in total.

out of which in PAPER -1 , you need to choose either bengali/ urdu / santhali / nepali/hindi  and should do "Letter writing (within 150 words) / Drafting of Report (within 200 words), Précis Writing, Composition and Translation from English to Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali".

also in paper -2consists - English – Letter writing (within 150 words) / Drafting of Report (within 200 words), Précis Writing, Composition and Translation from Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali to English.

so if you are comfortable with hindi or urdu or nepali or santali then bengali wouldnt be an essential subject for wbcs.
