Comparing these exams is like comparing water and fire. Both these exams are 100% different to one another.Althiugh one thing is common is that you will have to prepare for these exams very rigorously.
CAT exam is conducted for admission in Management courses popularly known as MBA which is 2 year pg degree.
Whereas GATE exam is conducted for engineering graduates who are interest in working for PSUs or want to persue M.tech in IIT and other top colleges in India.
Pattern of these exams are totally different.
In GATE you will be asked question related to stream for which you will apply and in CAT question are asked on topics like Quantitative aptitude,Reasoning and High level reading comprehension and english.
You must decide that in which field you want to see yourself working in future and where your interests lies.

CAT and GATE both are one of the toughest exams in India. The difficulty actually differs with the perspective of candidate. The candidate who prepares well, studies well for the exam don't find it that difficult than the one who doesn't.

CAT is totally based upon the logical and reasoning ability. One needs to practice as many questions as possible to be able to attempt them in examination. The more you practice, the more you will be able to think upon topics, the more you will be introduced to the type of questions and the more you will be able to solve them.

GATE is totally based on technical knowledge that one gains in under graduation. The candidate who prepares well, studies well throughout his under graduation doesn't find it that difficult to attempt the examination. The only thing is that the candidate must be thorough through all the subjects. Memorizing technique doesn't work in such exams. The basic, thorough and full knowledge of subjects is the only key to qualify the exam and obtain a good score.

The one who prepare honestly for these exams has a chance to qualify them and obtain good score. The one who appears without being serious about the exams, finds the exam very difficult.

we cannot compare the exams, the gate is used for getting a job in PSU or going for further M.tech in some premiere institutions like IIT's and other. On the other hand, CAT exam is for doing MBA in good b-schools, Gate exam depends more on the core subject of engineering whereas the gate exam is more mathematical and english driven. So due to your interest you can select cat or gate exam.
