Please guide me what is lateral entry?

Dear Anjali,
Lateral entry is a process in case someone completed diploma course and wants to join in graduation course, then student directly enter to 2nd year without join 1st year as same course.
Example :In B-Tech some one can get enter directly join in 2nd year, if cleared diploma course.This same process is called Lateral entry.
But as per JNU there is some criteria for Lateral BA in English -
Candidate must be passed bachelor degree or equivalent course with min 45% in 10th ,12th and +3 .
