Hello,
Till now it's not compulsory but according to some rumours it will be made compulsory after some years.But i will recommend you to apply for GATE if you are interested in your field.

Yeah !! Very soon it will be made compulsory to all the engineering students while presently as i have got information from my college lecturer that it is still under decision but it will be made compulsory.
