You can only give gate exam once you have passed your final year of B.Tech i.e. the fouth year.

So, as of now I would advice you to keep preparing for the exam as it is one of the toughest around and improve on your strong points.

You cannot give Gate exam during your second and third year of Btech.

You can write gate in your final year.

No, 2nd or 3rd year B.Tech students are not eligible to appear for the GATE exam now, earlier it was allowed though. If you are in the final year of your engineering or you have completed the course then you can appear for it.
