the jee mains importance/need is depends on the collge/university in which you're interested to take admission.since most of the colleges will consider both board exam marks and jee mains marks for their admission and other will consider only board exams or jee mains or score in any entrance exam conducted by that particular institute.so it's depends on the college and state (statewise we have kcet/comedk exams)only.please refer the following link to know the engineering colleges which are accepting jee mains score for admissions,

for other colleges,they may have separate entrance exam like LPU JEE.,
